Many times in the smartphone’s specification you can find information on water and dust resistance. The table below explains exactly what it means.

IP is just a shortcut for ”International Protection”. First number after IP means smartphone resistance against solid particles.

1	Against dangerous parts by hand and solid particles of size 50 mm or bigger.
2	Against dangerous parts by finger and solid particles of size 12.5 mm or bigger.
3	Against dangerous parts by tools and solid particles of size 2.5 mm or bigger.
4	Against dangerous parts by wire and solid particles of size 1 mm or bigger.
5	Against dust.
6	Completely dust-proof.

Second number after IP means smartphone resistance against water. In this table you can find 8 levels of waterproof protection. Highest level means better waterproof coefficient.

1	Against drops of water when phone is in vertical position.
2	Against drops of water when phone is 15 degree deviated from the vertical position.
3	Against water spraying (up to 60 degree deviated from the vertical position).
4	Against water spraying (position is not important).
5	Against cleaning (up to 12.5 l / min). So you can clean your phone under weak water stream.
6	Against hard cleaning (up to 100 l / min). So you can clean your phone under tap water.
7	Against dipping into water. Up to 30 minutes in maximum 1m deep.
8	Against dipping into water. But more specific values you can find into phone documentation. Level 8 is not specified by market but by manufacturer.
